RESUMEN.
Adaptación al cambio climático y la variabilidad: "algunas opciones de respuesta para la producción agrícola en Uruguay". Como se señala en varios informes del Panel Intergubernamental sobre Cambio Climático (IPCC, 2007a; IPCC, 2007b), la comunidad científica internacional expresa que el aumento en la concentración de gases de efecto invernadero tiene como resultado cambios en la variabilidad climática diaria, estacional, interanual y a lo largo de decenios. La variabilidad climática y la ocurrencia de eventos extremos (heladas, granizos, sequías) resulta en perjuicios muy importantes para el sector agropecuario y frecuentemente el sector requiere de varios años para recuperarse económica y financieramente de los daños ocasionados. La unidad de agroclima y sistemas de información (GRAS) del Instituto Nacional de Investigación Agropecuaria (INIA) de Uruguay en conjunto con el Banco Mundial (BM) y la Universidad de Cornell (UC) de los Estados Unidos de América, finalizaron en el año 2009 el proyecto "Vulnerabilidad al cambio climático en los sistemas de producción agrícola en América Latina y el Caribe: "desarrollo de respuestas y estrategias", (Giménez y Lanfranco, 2009). El objetivo de la propuesta fue formular un plan de acción con recomendaciones para el desarrollo de respuestas y estrategias con el fin de contribuir a una mejor adaptación a los impactos de la variabilidad climática y la ocurrencia de eventos climáticos extremos en los sistemas de producción agrícola de Uruguay. Como resultado del trabajo, se identificaron y priorizaron 3 opciones de respuesta: sistema de información y soporte para la toma de decisiones; gestión del agua; y seguros y otros instrumentos financieros para la gestión de riesgos.

Adaptation to climatic change and variability: "some response options to agricultural production in Uruguay". Like is mentioned in several reports of Intergovernmental Panel about Climatic Change (IPCC, 2007a; IPCC, 2007b), the international scientific community express that increase of greenhouse effect gas concentration has extreme changes in daily, seasonal, between years and along decades climatic variability. Climatic variability and occurrence of extreme events (frost, hail, droughts) results in very important damages for agricultural sector and is very frequent that this sector requires several years to economically and financially recover from such damages. The Agricultural Weather and Information Systems unit (GRAS) from National Institute of Agricultural Research (INIA) from Uruguay together with World Bank (BM) and Cornell University (CU) from United States of America, ended in year 2009 the project "Vulnerability to climatic change in agricultural production systems in Latin America and Caribbean: development of responses and strategies" (Giménez and Lanfranco, 2009). The aim of proposal was to outline an action plan with recommendations for development of responses and strategies with the purpose to contribute with a better adaptation to climatic variability impacts and occurrence of extreme climatic events in Uruguay's agricultural production systems. The outcome of the work was identification and giving priority 3 response options: system of information and support for decision making; water management; and insurance and other finance products for risk management. ABSTRACT.
This review considers the use of prostaglandin F2a and its synthetic analogues (PG) for controlling the estrous cycle of the ewe. Aspects such as phase of the estrus cycle, PG
analogues, PG doses, ovarian follicle development pattern, CL formation, progesterone synthesis, ovulation rate, sperm transport, embryo quality, and fertility rates after PG
administration are reviewed. Furthermore, protocols for estrus synchronization and their success in timed AI programs are discussed. Based on available information, the ovine CL is refractory to PG treatment for up to 2 days after ovulation. All PG analogues are effective when an appropriate dose is given; in that regard, there is a positive association between the dose administered and the proportion of ewes detected in estrus. Follicular response after PG is dependent on the phase of the estrous cycle at treatment. Altered sperm transport and low pregnancy rates are generally reported. However, reports on alteration of the steroidogenic capacity of preovulatory follicles, ovulation rate, embryo quality, recovery rates, and prolificacy, are controversial. Although various PG-based protocols can be used for estrus synchronization, a second PG injection improves estrus response when the stage of the estrous cycle at the first injection is unknown. The estrus cycle after PG administration has a normal length. Prostaglandin-based protocols for timed AI achieved poor reproductive outcomes, but increasing the interval between PG injections might increase pregnancy rates. Attempts to improve reproductive outcomes have been directed to provide a synchronized LH surge: use of different routes of AI (cervical or intrauterine), different PG doses, and increased intervals between PG injections. Finally we present our point of view regarding future perspectives on the use of PG in programs of controlled sheep reproduction.
